How My Small Company Beat the Giants in the Age of AI Search

By Sarah Hope

This week I typed a simple question into Google about my industry — and Google’s AI answered with my company. Top pick. Listed first, ahead of national organizations many times our size.

I sat there and grinned, because I know it wasn’t luck and it wasn’t a big ad budget. It was a strategy, executed piece by piece — and it’s one any founder can copy. So let me pull back the curtain.

Google’s AI Overview naming Vertical Identity as the top DOT consortium for a new authority

A little context: I run Vertical Identity, a nationwide DOT compliance company. I didn’t start it in a boardroom. I started in the field, working hands-on in this industry for years — learning it one customer, one hard day at a time. That foundation matters, because you can’t out-market a problem you don’t actually understand. Step one of thriving isn’t marketing. It’s knowing your customer better than anyone else does.

Here’s the rest of what we did:

1. We answered the whole question, not a slice of it

Our competitors sell one piece and stop. Our customers don’t need one thing — they need eleven. So we built the single, complete answer: every step they need, what it costs, where to get it, all in one place. We stopped making people hunt across ten websites.

Your takeaway: Be the complete answer in your niche, not one more partial option. Completeness is a competitive advantage almost nobody bothers to build.

2. We told the truth louder than anyone

Our whole industry hides pricing behind “call for a quote.” We did the opposite — published every price, plainly, on the page. Turns out transparency isn’t just ethical; it’s exactly what customers and AI search engines reward.

Your takeaway: Whatever your industry is afraid to say out loud — say it. Clarity builds trust, and trust is what gets you chosen.

3. We made our facts quotable — for humans and machines

This is the part most businesses are completely missing right now. Search isn’t ten blue links anymore. AI is reading the web and answering for people. So we wrote everything as clean, specific, citable facts and structured it so AI systems could actually understand and quote us. And they did — Google lifted our words almost verbatim into its answer.

Your takeaway: Stop writing for 2015. Write so an AI can quote you. The businesses that figure this out now get a head start the giants haven’t claimed yet.

4. We put a real person behind the brand

I built out a founder page — my name, my story, my credentials — and tied our content to it. Search engines and AI both reward real, accountable expertise over a faceless logo.

Your takeaway: You are your most undervalued asset. Don’t hide behind your brand. Be it.

The result

A woman-owned company out of Phoenix — named the #1 provider in its industry by Google’s own AI, ahead of competitors with a twenty-year head start.

I didn’t outspend them. I out-served them — and made sure the internet could see it.

The mindset that made it possible

You don’t have to be the biggest to be the best answer. You have to be the clearest, the most useful, and the most honest — and you have to be brave enough to embrace new tools instead of fearing them.

That’s the whole game right now. AI is rewriting how every customer finds every business, and most owners are frozen. The ones who lean in — who get genuinely useful, get specific, and get visible — are going to eat a decade’s worth of market share in the next few years.

The giants had the head start. We caught them by being better, and by refusing to be invisible.

You can too. Onward.
