Why I Build in Silence (And What It's Like to Have No Inner Voice)
I’m usually working by 5am. Not because I’m disciplined. Because that’s when the world is quiet.
I Don’t Have an Inner Dialogue
Here’s something most people find strange: I don’t have a voice in my head.
When you read these words, you might “hear” them internally. I don’t. My thoughts don’t arrive as sentences - they come as shapes, patterns, connections. It’s hard to explain to someone who’s never experienced it.
For a long time, I didn’t even know this was unusual.
Why Silence Matters
Because I don’t have that internal narrator, external noise hits differently. There’s no inner voice to compete with the sounds around me - they just… take over.
Background music? Distracting. Coffee shop chatter? Impossible. TV in the other room? Forget it.
But silence? Silence is where I do my best thinking.
The Early Morning Advantage
At 5am, nobody’s texting. Slack is quiet. The neighborhood is still.
This is when I build. When I solve problems. When I map out the next move for my businesses.
By the time the rest of the world wakes up, I’ve already had 2-3 hours of my most productive time.
It’s Not About Waking Up Early
People ask how I “became” a morning person. I didn’t. I just figured out when my brain works best and stopped fighting it.
If you do your best work at midnight, do that. The point isn’t the hour - it’s protecting the conditions where you think clearly.
Curious if you have an inner dialogue? Try this: think about what you’re having for dinner. Did you “hear” yourself say the words, or did an image or concept just appear? About 30-50% of people don’t have that inner voice - and many don’t realize it until someone asks.
I’d love to know: When do YOU do your best work? Early morning? Late night? Coffee shop or complete silence? Drop a comment or message me - I’m genuinely curious how other entrepreneurs protect their thinking time.
